Targets and Results

Are the calculator’s targets recommendations?

No. The calculator performs the requested calculation; it does not decide whether a target or recipe is sensible. A green result or 100% match does not automatically mean it is a good fertilizer. Beginners should start from a known dosing regime or commercial-product target rather than selecting compounds merely to make every result reach 100%.

What do the weekly, per-dose, and container results mean?

The target normally represents the nutrient addition over the configured dosing period. Container volume, dose amount, and dosing frequency determine the solution concentration and the amount delivered per dose. Changing the dosing regime does not necessarily change the total weekly nutrient target.

Does the calculated dose equal the final concentration in the aquarium?

No. It is the planned nutrient addition. Plant uptake, water changes, previous dosing, and existing nutrient levels all affect the concentration that remains in the aquarium.

Preparing Fertilizer Solutions

How should I prepare solutions?

  • Use RO/DI or distilled water only. Never use tap water.
  • Use clean, dry containers (e.g. use boiling water to rinse containers before use).
  • When instructed to acidify, do so before adding any salts.
  • It is possible to dissolve the compounds in less than the final amount of water, then top up to the selected container volume.

How much solution should I prepare?

Prepare reasonably small batches rather than enough for many months or years. Smaller batches reduce the risk of contamination, degradation, and concentration changes during storage.

Should some compounds be kept in separate containers?

Yes, when compatibility is uncertain. Separate macro and micro solutions are generally safer than highly concentrated all-in-one mixtures.

Compounds and Input Data

What quality of compounds should I use?

Use compounds from a reputable supplier with a clearly stated composition and specification. Always ensure the compound matches the hydrate form, nutrient percentage and chelate type selected in the calculator. Avoid products with unknown purity, undisclosed additives or uncertain composition.

How important is it to select the exact compound?

Very important. Check the hydrate form, nutrient percentage, and chelate type. Similar product names do not guarantee the same composition. Some compounds can also absorb moisture during storage, which may affect their effective concentration.

Can I measure compounds with teaspoons?

An accurate scale is strongly recommended. Teaspoon measurements vary with spoon size, particle size, moisture, and how tightly the compound is packed.

How reliable should my water-report values be?

Use current and reasonably reliable values in the correct units. If a water report gives a wide range, is outdated, or changes seasonally, test the current water or leave optional values blank rather than guessing.

Cloning Commercial Products

Does a clone reproduce a commercial fertilizer exactly?

No. A clone reproduces the declared nutrient output of the product. It cannot reproduce undisclosed ingredients, stabilizers, processing methods, or nutrients that the manufacturer does not report.
